History
The Market Street Singers, named for Ballard’s “Main Street,” debuted in the summer of 2004 for a Ballard ARTwalk. News of a new community choir for Ballard spread quickly, drawing 35 singers who pulled off a well-received performance with only six rehearsals. Our performance later that year at a fundraiser for the Interfaith Hospitality Network to aid homeless families began a tradition of community service appearances at hospitals, retirement centers, and charity events.
In 2006 the chorus was awarded a significant grant from the City of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Small and Simple Grants program to build our organizational strength and produce “Shilshole on the Pacific Rim,” a concert celebrating our connection to the global community. In 2012 the City of Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs chose us as a recipient of the highly competitive Civic Partners grant, which we have been awarded every year since.
Since then we have grown in size and visibility, appearing at numerous venues throughout the community and collaborating with numerous, diverse guest artists and other performing ensembles. We bring our popular Festival of Favorites choral classics sing-along to the Northwest Folklife Festival annually.
